about us

Our department is specialized in cardiac arrhythmias and is one of the oldest in France.

Most of our research has been focused on catheter ablation. In the 80s, catheter ablation was limited to "simple" arrhythmias like focal atrial tachycardia or junctionnal arrhythmias. In 1993, we did the first atrial fibrillation ablation in a patient. The initial procedures were targeting the right atrium only and associated with a limited success rate. The extension of the lesions to left atrium demonstrated a much better clinical outcome. We then discovered the prominent role of pulmonary veins in the initiation and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation.

Pulmonary vein isolation is now recognized as the corner stone of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation as acknowledged in the international recommendations.

Our department is part of the french public health care system but we have developed a private practice for foreigners.
